Abstract
Introduction: Using structural equation modeling, the relationships between early maladaptive schemas and positive and negative emotions with the mediating role of alexithymia in disabled veterans are examined in this study.
Method: The participants included 225 disabled veterans from Qom, Iran selected through the convenience sampling method. Young’s Early Maladaptive Schemas with the Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.93, the Positive and Negative Emotions Scale with the Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.86, and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale with the Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.85 were utilized to collect the data. Structural equations modeling (SEM) and Sobel test were employed to explore the direct and indirect pathways of the study’s model, respectively.
Results: The results revealed that early maladaptive schemas and negative and positive emotions are the antecedents and consequences of alexithymia in disabled veterans, respectively. The results further indicated that alexithymia has a significant mediating role in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and negative and positive emotions.
Discussion: The findings of this study could greatly help the decision makers improve the conditions of disabled veterans.
